Server Issue with sudden high ping spikes

We have been experiencing high ping spikes, players go from 35 to 1500 during the game. This lasts for a few hours. Also noted that the server ping is much higher. Restart has no effect, also internet speed upload, and download seem fine. Some have said this could be a DDoS attack.
I'm no saying it was an attack, but it could have been some wierd internet issue.

Step one how do you know if the server is under attack?
How can i track the I.P. if it is?
How do you stop it?

Any advice will help.

Probably a trogan hit your server, same thing happened with the UM ( Unreal Mayhem ) servers in the past week.

Do a traceroute to your server, and then see where the high ping is coming from. Some places along the way could get DDoS'd and it may not be just the server, somehow. Report any information to your server host and talk to your server host and find out about this.

Example of doing a traceroute to your server:
tracert IPAddress or tracert HostName
