Brush/Mesh/Model editing and conversion tools

Post by Dr.Flay »

Many 3D packages have extra import/export plugins so you can often prepare your brush in something useful.
If you have some odd formats or lack of 3D software, then conversion tools can help get your brushes tweaked and imported.

MeshLab
http://meshlab.sourceforge.net
import:PLY, STL, OFF, OBJ, 3DS, COLLADA, PTX, V3D, PTS, APTS, XYZ, GTS, TRI, ASC, X3D, X3DV, VRML, ALN
export:PLY, STL, OFF, OBJ, 3DS, COLLADA, VRML, DXF, GTS, U3D, IDTF, X3D
Open Asset Import Library
https://www.assimp.org
https://github.com/assimp
(short name: Assimp) is a portable Open Source library to import various well-known 3D model formats in a uniform manner. The most recent version also knows how to export 3d files and is therefore suitable as a general-purpose 3D model converter.

winmeshview reads meshes in .ply, .3ds, .face, .obj, and .smesh format, and writes meshes in .smesh, .face/.node, Abaqus .inp, and .obj format. It can also export to a format referred to as ".anode", which is the equivalent of a TetGen node file with only a reference to an element file.

meshconv 3D model converter
http://www.cs.princeton.edu/~min/meshconv/
meshconv converts to and from several popular 3D file formats. Currently only geometry conversion is supported.
Features
•input and output formats:
◦nearly 100% VRML 2.0 support (input 2.0, output 1.0 and 2.0)

One question, are UT model files .3D or .T3D ? Because looking it up in these converters it's shows different for each.

I know this might be a small necro but I have a question about all these tools. Would I be able to say make something in Ued and then export the whole level then convert it to a wavefron .obj with tri-tesolation?

A little back story to why I ask:

recently SuperMonkeyBall has had it's level system cracked. We know how to import levels for customs. Requires a .obj file and I'm stupidly bad at other programs (currently wings 3d) I would be at an advantage if I used UnrealEd for the modeling.

Bump. I think this should be given more attention, since new modders need resources to make their own Unreal meshes, and also because... what about the U3D program I sent you some months ago? I still have it on Google Drive (which mistakes it for virus).

You have to be able to implement your ideas or provide some useful skill. Never join a project whose idea man or leader has no obvious development skills. Never join a project that only has a web designer. You have your own ideas. Focus on them carefully and in small chunks and you will be able to develop cool projects."
