3d unlimited detail

Post by Myth »

Hellow fans of 3d computer games ect.

In a few years 20 years of polygon technology and power hungry GPUs might get useless and obsolete.

There is a new type of technology under development that allows unlimited amount of point cloud data to be displayed on screen using only a standard CPU.

Keep in mind that the following demos are run on a single core laptop and that the art is create by the programmer only to test the system.

Holy sh*t!!

The bad thing is that is like oil, there are better alternatives, but the big companies won't let that happen since that would mean the death of all their efforts on selling VCards.

The good thing... well, it's obvious, that's basically the edge to make virtual reality and focus the rest of the CPU power on physics (well, new PCs could be developed, instead of a little powerfull CPU and a powerfull VCard, we could have a powerfull CPU and a powerfull physics and lighting CPU). That's going to be a huge revolution if it sees the light of the day

it looks promising, though a bit amateurish to release teasers with such little details if it is indeed a revolutionary invention? I mean ... first impression lasts and I don't see anything I haven't seen possible to make before?

I don't care how the graphic is drawn, and does players, it's what it looks like that counts. A decent Vcard can be achieved for littlem oney ... so for the end user it won't make much difference i think.

But let's see what the future brings, surely new revolutions will come, but this doesn't look like one to me? Not the way it's presented.

I watched this and I'm both stunned and deeply troubled by it.

I get the idea though the videos are unnecessarily vague about how things are done. I felt like I was in an infomercial (anyone care to count the times he says 'unlimited'?). Oh, and by the way that's technically very incorrect and he even says so. It's completely limited by the resolution of the monitor.

Here's my issue with it. Let's take DaVinci's Last Supper and make it unlimited detail. I can render that thing down to the pixel and it's going to look gorgeous, I agree. I can even do this on a single core system, according to the videos.

Now animate them. Make them being eating.

This is where the meat and potatoes of graphic driven engines are at, and why I kinda yawn at this. You can cheat the visual render like they say but you still have to compute physics, run all the functions, and handle every one of the backend jobs required for the game to run.

I'm not really a 3D rendering specialist but I must say that I'm very sceptical. The video was very nice and I can see how it is possible to fluently render incredibly complex static scenes using software rendering, even with realistic shading and reflections. What I can't see is how you're going to support physics. If your world is just a giant point grid and nothing more, how will you know which points make up an object, what the forces are that bind these points, what the physical properties of your geometry are etc. I'd also expect it to be a giant pain to design levels like this. Will sure be interesting to see if anything comes out of this :)

If this ever gets released as a SDK I suspect that people will make hybrid system using this method for static geometry and polygons for dynamic geometry.

Imagine it like the level is made out of this and the players, weapons and inventory are polygon meshes. It does not defeat the purpose. The world geometry wouln't use any polys so the characters can be really hi poly and the system fully benefits from both technologies.

But what if this gets hardware accelerated by a future Nvidia/Ati gpu?

I hope they'll show off some more soon.

Isn't this what CUDA is already for? To make the GPU work as a CPU?
