Quake Live and What is Happening With the Game Industry ?!

Postby Phorce » Thu Apr 16, 2009 8:15 pm

Hello,

This rant has to come out somewhere :rocket1: . I was just reading my Pc Zone mag about Quake Live "It's Alive! Alive!" blares the headline. Then I read that there will be no modding of Quake Live. I remains cynical :wth:. The QL site says "free.... freeeeeeeee!" ... LOL. Oh come on guys .. don't suck my u know what .. you must have a business model somewhere  .

What is going on with this industry ? I've seen the admins and others spouting sense ... sense ! On this forum so I know I'm in good hands (I hope). The industry propagates the most stupid, ram u through the floor boards thinking. Some people think that more recent engines are "more advanced" even though they are becoming more retarded and generic. This is like slapping a nice shiny coat of paint on a house and calling it a Mansion. Anyone can update an engine to show higher res textures and snazzy shaders :nonono:. I'm a coder so I know what I'm talking about.

But (I can see the the legions of besuited agents bearing down on me now). Actually I'm not "anti commercial". If these businesses actually came up with some ideas and tried to SELL ME SOMETHING (remember that?) instead of treating me like a child then I would respect them as entrepreneurs. Why do I get the feeling that some really inept managers and marketing people are in the process of ruining their own industry and profit spreadsheets :noidea ?

I have tried to put my money where my mouth is by starting my own project. Ahhh! this post is all an advert! Well, maybe. But it's an open source project. Open Combat that aims to give modders and mappers something to work with without license and business model restrictions .

OK, rant over .. I feel better now.

I have no idea if I have understood you right.. you are a little bit pissed of that Quake live as like some other games are no anti-modable? (no editor)?
For Quake Live .. well we have Quake 3 and about the other games.. only a guess, not everybody seems to want to include an editor although custom stuff from the community keeps a game alive. UT1 would be surely already dead without editor as like maybe the other unreal and ut games as well. (GOW seems not to need an editor for a big success, not only you can not creat any custom stuff on consoles [lets not speak about the GOW1 port for pc]).
About to be non-active
My very last UT map project: CTF-FacePalm (tropical CTF-Face remake)
Why do I leave? click here
What I want to do next: Joining an UDK team (uncertain however) and improve 3D modelling and texture editing skills
Thanks to those who visibly supported me until/at the end!

I think you've basically understood me. No, not everything has to be moddable, but I'm fine tuned to picking up on destructive commercial forces. They can be very manipulative. Rasing the hopes and dreams of talented young modders and then fudging that dream with ill thought out approaches.

My rant made me think ... why whinge and complain ? I should conentrate on my project more. I have started using Blender Game Engine. It has logic blocks in it like Sandbox 2 editor has (Cryengine). In fact Blender GE looks to me like the Open Source Editor and game engine that the modding community has needed for years.

Quake Live was never designed for custom content due its idea - browser multiplayer game. It is like saying " OMG World Of Warcrap needs editor ". For modding you have Quake 3 or even Quake 4. Both games are quite often played so why not stop complaining and start modding for those games?

I just said that didn't I ? I am working on my project instead of complaining.

Anyway, what you're saying would be right if it wasn't only Quake Live. I only used that as an example. Games like Far Cry 2 do listen to their customers and try out new ideas, but gaming is becoming big. Very big, and where "money talks, bullshit walks" as the saying goes. I am simply pointing out the dangers. This is not "complaining".
