Skybox problems...

Postby GEx » Tue Jun 26, 2012 2:19 pm

(Something tells me I should be feeling pretty stupid right now...)

I built 1 of the bases of my map, then a 256x256x256 cube outside of my map, then a big cube for the skybox and the textures of the base disappiered. Did I forget something?

Setting the surfaces to "Fake Backdrop" and/or the SkyZoneInfo within the Sky cube... without any further information we CAN NOT help you.

What I want to do next: Joining an UDK team (uncertain however) and improve 3D modelling and texture editing skills

Ok, sorry...
Whenever I subtract the big cube, the textures of the base cube disappear. I just don't know how to explain. I read a few tuts but they didn't explain this properly.
EDIT: Actually, how do you guys make those outside kind of maps? I'm really a newbie with mapping as you can see :( .

Damn I am bad at explaining such things ... read some tutorials first.
Here this is a good beginner guide. http://www.digital-architect.org/misc_u ... torial.php
http://www.birrabrothers.com/drac/index.php?dsps=103 <= one of the best tutorials out there.

To understand how UEd works ...the void is filled with mass and you cut your map out of this mass ...think about it like you carve a hole in a turnip.
subtraction goes before addition.

Are the walls of your main map (not the skybox) set to fake backdrop?

Edit: wait I see what's wrong. Short version follows.

Build your map as normal. Add the skybox near the end. The skybox cannot touch the main map, nor can it overlap or be inside it. The skybox must be completely removed from the main map.
Inside the skybox add a skyzone actor and in your main map flag the surfaces you want to see through as 'Fake Backdrop' and if you have the joystick highlighted you will see the skybox illusion working immediately.
/away for now.

Looks like a brush order issue.
Right-click the smaller cube and set order -to last.
