Theme and Game-type is free to choose by the mapper.

This sounds great.

Is this still up to date?
Well, I think a general direction is slowly forming now? About size I'll vote for UnrealGecko's suggestion 512k. I think ut99.org staff should gather and put together this contest soon based on the great amount of feedback? Though, there are still points remaining - timeframe!?!? .... How much time will we get to produce the map(s) once the rules is set? And.... Packages!?!? I'll suggest that the mapper should create the map so that it will play on an "official" UT install, meaning: UT G.O.T.Y v436 with BP1,BP2,BP3 and BP4 only.

As an addition I'd like to offer to put a Vanilla UT server with said bonus packages available for the maps to be showcased and tested during the contest. I'm not aware of the nationalities of all mappers, but the judges could set say a two week period for testing and I could then host it one week in the US and one week in Europe? The server could be private during map creation for the mappers to test their map(s) if needed?

Xmas 2012 Mapping Contest - Map votes
48 hours speed mapping contest 2013
And this time will there be a price for the winner ...don't sweat it! It will be something cooler than money.

Failed to find package 'Slums'.

EDIT: NVM, I'm an idiot (derp). I put it in my UT install and dbl clicked it but Unreal tried to open it. This is actually a nice map but 99k is just too small a package size. It's going to limit things to mini-arena maps. Perhaps 990k from UT99.ORG if you wanted to carry that theme? Nearly a meg is plenty of room for most anyone but not so huge you can do anything.

BTW does anyone remember those compression contests they used to have back in the day? I had an exe somewhere that was like 64k and it was 20 minutes of 3d pictures with music. Really insane amount of compressing. Here's a youtube of one (link borked so I don't hijack the thread): http://www. youtube.com/watch?v=wir8sSDfW5Q
So long, and thanks for all the fish

I like the idea of choosing our own size. 512k appeals to the geek in me, 666k appeals to the \m/etal in me, and 99k appeals to the Amiga nerd in me.
(perhaps the 99k thing is something we can keep running permanently for the hell of it)

I understand not wanting to make maps limited by time of year, and Christmas is not looking popular.
A limited size map can then be any theme you like.

Samhain is the European "festival of the dead" now imported back as Halloween.
It can be interpreted as "ancestor worship" as you pay homage to the dead, but has become more about monsters and ghosts.
Therefore is also an expansive choice, which could easily be a moment in the past, a Nali temple, or a nightmare dungeon (the Nali would also have a festival of the dead).

I have suggested that we host the final maps on the house server, but we'll may well need a handy test bed until then :tu:
All bonus packs should be considered part of a minimal requirements, so yeah all allowed.
Chaos textures and the first 3 deco packs should also be standard to GOTY.

Ah yes the 64k demos. My love of the demo scene and Amigas is why I am always looking for ways to optimise something.
So if you are impressed with 64k, see what can be done in 4 !
(mixed 4 and 64k demos) http://www.demoscene.tv/page.php?id=614&lang=uk
Compression was always a major factor, but so is not using any bitmaps or video.
The whole point of the demo scene, is that what you see, is being rendered as you watch not streamed or unpacked.
When you see the progress bars or dots at the beginning it is not unpacking, but pre-rendering.
You reuse as much code as possible.
Demos actually mirror the tracker modules invented to go with them.
Here is a good example. Check the quality and length of this 28.6k module

Hmm... Well I am a fan of hard rock...
Or 333k, as tribute to 333networks :D.
I agree with FnB about it being in the 300-600k range... But... Scr*w it I vote for 666k. Hard Rock Hallelujah!!

Or because our forum file-limit is 2 MB ... the 2048K contest!!! :ironic:

We could also make it the 666k contest ...looks cool ...and we are not that religious here, right?
Maybe a 999k ?? ...I'm just brainstorming.
667k...the kilobyte next door.

Or 2014k.

I like the filesize limit contest idea! Maybe I'll join.
As someone who was stuck on really old computers (I was playing games on a ibm pc xt in 1999) for a long time a sense of efficiency when it comes to resources has been burned into me. seeing games take up 20+ GB annoys the hell out of me (and STILL have shitty models/textures)

We could also set the limit to 720k so we can share the maps on 3.5" DS DD floppies :P

OK ...it's set then ... the 666k Contest because UT99.org is so heavily metal.
Theme is free to choose ...game types should be nothing too exotic.
I will cancel the vote now.
