Space Models
Space Models
Hello and best wishes to all, I just found this little gem from NASA whilst looking for models. http://nasa3d.arc.nasa.gov/models I was looking for fairground models for a fairground map, maybe I'll make a space museum instead.

Re: Space Models
Groovy, a handy reminder, as I was looking at these recently but forgot
I moved this into the "Downloads" section.
Hmm, this could actually turn into it's own useful thread, as I have some other ideas for space model sources.
Most would need simplifying though, as I doubt UEd could handle the full quality Nostromo !

Re: Space Models
Hi Leovinus. These models need poly reduction first if you still plan making an museum from those.. .

Re: Space Models
He is actually working with UT2004, but the more complex models will definitely need simplifying in MeshLab or something.
However there are a few lower res models that may be usable without much fuss.

Re: Space Models
If converting or using 3DS files is not a problem for you, then the "Celestia Motherlode" may be a gold-mine for some people.
Me for example, I finally have a free Stonehenge mesh !
http://www.celestiamotherlode.net
A huge mix of qualities in there. Thankfully many low poly treats and many freaking fantasticaly detailed models !
Every file has authors details on the site and a readme in the zip.

Re: Space Models
I wouldn't bother with about 90% of those models. Unreal engine has a huge problem with 'circular' because of the polygon nature of it's meshes. It forces a high facet count per model and that's a killer. Even vastly reduced those are going to have some pretty advanced (for UT) rendering.
So long, and thanks for all the fish

Re: Space Models
Hehe, probably 90% of it is just a ball anyway, you are right, however poking around the spacecraft I found a few low-poly satellites and ships.
The Stonehenge model needs to be converted and reduced, but could work for a landscape map rather than a model.
Thankfully various tools I posted can be used to clean and reduce meshes into something more suitable (I may try a higher quality in UT2004 if I can salvage my drive).
Actually I noticed that some of the import settings of the tool "ASSIMP viewer" help to simplify or merge meshes even before you use the fancy settings in MeshLab or other advanced tool.
A few meshes I have opened with it have had as much as 50% of the vertices removed !
